Jamshedpur, October 06, 2010

~The coveted title has been awarded to the Company for the second consecutive year, recognizing Tata Steel as an injury-free and healthy workplace~

Worldsteel Association (‘worldsteel’) has conferred Tata Steel with the ‘Safety and Health Excellence Recognition Award 2010’. This is the second consecutive year that the Company has been selected for the coveted award.

The award recognizes an enterprise’s excellence in its commitment and innovation in the pursuit of Zero; an injury and illness-free healthy workplace. The title is based on an enterprise’s operations, which are in consonance with the key assessment criteria of ‘worldsteel’ that include:

  • The practice should support and demonstrate the ‘worldsteel’ Safety and Health Principles in the workplace
  • The participating enterprise has to show that the practice has had a positive impact on the safety or health metrics of the organisation, with a clear evidence of LTI (Loss Time Injury/fatality prevention, or other company metric improvement (leading or lagging indicator) or show health improvements as a result of the practice
  • The practice should be applicable to a significant majority of ‘worldsteel’ member-organisations.

The promotion of excellence in safety and health practices, endorsed at the highest level, is one of the fundamental goals of all ‘worldsteel’ member companies. ‘worldsteel’ launched the Safety and Health Excellence Recognition Award at its 2008 Annual General Meeting held in Washington DC.

Tata Steel initiated its safety excellence journey under the guidance of DuPont resources, a world-class leader in safety. The safety programmes which began at Tata Steel Works, for both its own employees and contractors’ employees, have been rolled out across all locations, including Mines. With the initiative, the Company aspires to become a global benchmark in safe operations.

Tata Steel’s programme on contract workforce focuses on comprehensive training prior to commencement of any construction. The Safety and Health Excellence Recognition Award received from ‘worldsteel’ last year was related to a safety training programme that was introduced for the Company’s contract workforce prior to construction of the new `H’ Blast Furnace at Jamshedpur. The `H’ blast furnace was commissioned without any injuries, recording 35-million accident-free man hours.

Tata Steel’s safety and occupational health responsibilities are driven by the Company’s commitment to ensure zero harm to people, a clause that is mentioned in Tata Steel’s Safety & Occupational Health (S & OH) Policy.
