Bringing Down The Hurdles

Born in Ghato Tand, Ramgarh district of West Bokaro, 19-year-old Sapna Kumari has always been driven to make to the big league. Daughter to Pratima Devi and Shyam Sunder Singh, Swapna has had many accolades to her name. Apart from holding the National Record for the fastest senior and junior women's 100m Hurdles at 13.61 seconds, Sapna has won several national-level prizes. She placed first at the all-India inter-university athletics representing Vinobha Bhave University. She’s also had her fair share of fame with several media houses covering her dream is to represent India at the Olympics one day. Being the sportsperson that she is, she has dedicated the past five years of her life for this sole purpose.
Her rigorous training schedule stands testimony to this fact. She gets up every day at 0600 and heads to the track for a 3-hour long session. The next round of her daily training routine starts at 1530 and stretches till 1800. Sapna says that the Sports Scholarship from Tata Steel would reduce pressure on her parents as it would help her maintain her strict regimen and requirements.

Her friends have always been an integral part of her journey. She also says that practicing with boys every opportunity she gets helps her keep her edge.
