ASPIRE Knowledge Manthan - A Unique Initiative Launched at Tata Steel

Jamshedpur, March 02, 2004

Knowledge needs of different employees in a department are different. While the knowledge requirement of MD is different, the needs are different for a HOD. Similarly knowledge needs for officers in the department are different and people who perform the work on the shop floor have different knowledge needs. While there are systems and processes in place to enable knowledge sharing amongst all levels of officers, there was no process to enable knowledge sharing amongst the supervisors and workmen. With this objective "Aspire Knowledge Manthan" was launched today.

The function was organised by the Knowledge Management Group and Joint Consultations at Michael John Auditorium today. On a pilot basis five topics have been identified. These are Motors, Lubrication, EOT Cranes, Water Treatment and Leveling & Alignment. Employees from various departments have been identified to participate in these topics. Today, Knowledge Manthan took place for one of the topics i.e. "Motors". There were more than 50 participants from various departments. All the other topics will be discussed as per the schedule.

In the steel industry, ASPIRE Knowledge Manthan is one of the rarest programmes of its kind. The purpose of this effort is to give confidence to people in performing their work better, said Dr. T. Mukherjee, Dy. Managing Director (Steel), Tata Steel, and Chief Guest of the function. Dr. Mukherjee considers this programme as the one of the best means to assimilate knowledge and disseminate it among a large audience. It was unstructured Knowledge Manthan that made us the lowest refractory consumer in the world, he added. He also said that it will give immense satisfaction to people when they will see that the ideas given by them are giving benefits to other departments. He also said that the vision of Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam the President of India that India would become a developed nation by 2020 can be helped greatly by such initiatives.

While addressing the gathering, Mr. R B.B. Singh President Tata Workers Union and the Guest of Honour of the function said it is a great attempt. He suggested that similar to MD online a Knowledge discussion in the leadership of DMD (Steel) should be started where workers would exchange their ideas and enhance their knowledge. He said setting up of Workers development Center as promised by the Managing Director Tata Steel, will be a great help to the workers to progress in this direction.
