TSFIF creates record of 328 Laparoscopic Tubectomy Operations in a single day

Jamshedpur, February 23, 2004

The goal at Tata Steel's Family Initiatives Foundation (TSFIF) is not to turn away any lady back without performing the operation. This is crucial for TSFIF as the women come from far-flung rural areas and if not attended to the first time, do not come back. If un-operated, they conceive on returning home and are burdened with the overload of looking after another addition in the family, which they can ill afford.

TSFIF created a record of conducting 328 Laparoscopic Tubectomy operations at Centre for Family Initiatives on the February 17, 2004 breaking the previous record of doing 216 operations created the previous week. This latter record had not been broken for 25 years.

Operations began at 8:00am and went on till 9:30pm.The doctors who operated on the day were Dr. R A Balsara, Dr. Kamini, Dr. Kameshwari, Dr. Neeta and Dr. Pratima. All volunteered their services for this noble cause.

Head of Family Initiatives, TSFIF, Dr. Jagannath said, "Sterilisation provides a unique opportunity for diagnosing and treating women as well as raising reproductive health awareness."

TSFIF delivers this service not only at camps held at Centre for Family Initiatives in Jamshedpur but also through mobile services for sterilisation in outreach camps. Out-reach camps have allowed the program to offer sterilisation to clients who live at great distances in remote rural locations far from static facilities. Behragora, Dumaria, Patamda, Musabani, Noamundi, and Gamharia are some of the areas that have been covered during the last two years through TSFIF outreach camps.
