TMH Rolls Out Otoacoustic Emission Detection System

Jamshedpur, December 09, 2009

- Tata Steel dedicates this initiative to the people of Jamshedpur and its neighbouring areas -

The much awaited Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) system for detecting audio deficiency in a new-born was formally launched today at Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur.

OAE was inaugurated by Mr Partha Sengupta, Vice President (Corporate Services), Tata Steel in presence of a large gathering of people. One of the pioneering initiatives in Jamshedpur and Jharkhand, this system is set to detect audio deficiency in a child minutes after its birth, thereby reducing the time lapsed in detection. Once detected, the child can undergo further treatment such that he/ she is restored to near normal condition.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sengupta said, “Tata Steel has shared a symbiotic relationship with the people of Jamshedpur and its surrounding areas more than a century now. With each pioneering initiative, it has taken a step further to secure this relation even firmly. It is a moment when we can think and chalk out many noble initiatives for the specially abled children The OAE system will serve as a boon to our society by helping to detect audio deficiency in newborns. This will help in reducing the number of deaf-mute cases in our society.”

The occasion was attended by many social organisations of the city including Bal Vihar, School of Hope and others, dedicated towards the well being and uplift of children. The event was made even livelier with the first detection test that was carried out on a two-month old child. Tata Steel encourages citizens of Jamshedpur to come forward and take this test such that the future of tomorrow remains free of deaf-mutism and all shortcomings that accompany it.
