Tata Steel's Quarter 1, 2003-04 Performance Creates History - Surpasses One Million Tonne Production
For the first time in the history of Tata Steel, the Company produced more than a million tonnes of crude steel in the first quarter i.e. the quarter ending 30th of June, this year. The saleable steel production was 0.989 million tonnes, a 17% jump over that of the corresponding period of last year.
These record production figures have been supported by domestic sales and exports. The monthly export figure went beyond 100,000 tonnes for the first time in the month of June. The total sales reached a figure of 0.91 million tonnes compared to 0.78 million tonnes for the same quarter of last year. The initiative to enrich the product mix of Tata Steel continues to provide excellent results. The supply from the Cold Rolling Mill to original equipment manufacturers, for example automobiles and white goods went up by 64%. The sale of branded products namely Tata Tiscon reinforcing bars, Tata Shaktee corrugated galvanised sheets and Tata Steelium cold rolled sheets, witnessed a significant spurt in sales, in this period.
The efforts to enrich product mix and to brand its products has moved to de-link Tata Steel's performance from the cyclical steel prices to a more stable and high realisation regime.
One blast furnace of Tata Steel was down during the first quarter of this year for relining. This furnace was blown in on 30th of June and has come to full production level on 3rd of July. This furnace is expected to produce at the rate of 50,000 t.p.m, boosting up the total production of the Company in future months.
