Tata Steel sets New Highs - Breaks Records on all fronts

Tata Steel completed the fiscal, 2003-04 on a thumping note as it surpassed its previous bests and established new all time records across all fronts.

For the first time in the history of Tata Steel, the Steel Works crossed 4.00 million tonnes mark producing 4.09 million tonnes of saleable steel, up by 3.8 % over last year. The hot metal production at 4.47 million tonnes is an all time high. The company achieved a record production of 4.22 million tonnes of crude steel, 3% higher than the previous best of 4.1 million tonnes achieved during the last fiscal.

Most of the divisions/ departments such as the West Bokaro Collieries, Ore, Mines & Quarries, Coke Plant, LD 2, Wire Rod Mill, Merchant Mill, Hot Strip Mill, Cold Rolling Mill to name a few, attained their best ever annual production. The 'F' Blast Furnace that was revamped in 2002, accomplished its second million tonnes of production in 319 days. For the first time too, saleable steel dispatches crossed 4 million tonnes. At 4.09 million tonnes, this was 4.5 % higher than the previous best attained in 2002-03.

The Company recorded best annual production in all profit centers namely Tubes Division, Secondary Products, Rings & Agrico Division, Tata Growth Shop, Bearings Division and Wire Division. All the associate companies of Tata Steel ended the year with a note of record achievements.

During 2003-04, Tata Steel sold more steel than in any year before. At 3.97 million tonnes, the sales were higher by 2.1% compared to last fiscal. It registered a turnover on exports for the second year running. The company significantly increased its presence significantly in the markets by increasing its share in the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) category like auto direct, ancillaries and appliances. It appreciably gained market share in focus segments such as auto and construction. The sales of branded flat products jumped up by a huge 190% over last year, while Tiscon, the well known brand of rebars, registered its best ever sales. Tata Steel has also emerged as a preferred supplier to major companies in the auto and white goods segment.
