Tata Steel to Decommission India’s First Stamp Charge Coke Oven Battery at its Jamshedpur Works

Jamshedpur, January 26, 2025

Tata Steel is set to decommission the Coke Oven Battery #7, India’s first stamp charge coke oven battery, at its Jamshedpur Works on January 27, 2025, after an exemplary service life of 36 years. Commissioned in 1989 as a pioneering innovation in its time, this was India’s first stamp-charge coke oven battery, setting benchmarks in efficiency, innovation, and sustainable coke-making. Over its lifespan, the battery produced over 12 million tonnes of coke and revolutionised the steel industry. The decommissioning of Coke Oven Battery #7 is a moment to honour its contribution to our industry as we look forward to continuing our legacy of innovation and sustainable growth.

The decommissioning process will involve isolating the battery from the By-Product Plant foul gas suction network. During the shutdown, raw gas from the ovens will be safely flared from oven top flares and ascension pipes as per standard operating procedures. Flaring will commence at 9:00 am (IST) on January 27, 2025, and continue for nearly 24 hours.

We wish to emphasise that this is a planned and controlled activity, and the flaring observed during this time is entirely safe. It is part of the decommissioning protocol and should not be misinterpreted as an emergency or cause for concern.

This advisory is being issued to inform the public about the decommissioning process and to avoid any misinterpretation of the flaring that will occur during the procedure for retiring the battery.
