Tata Steel recognised as Steel Sustainability Champion by worldsteel for the ninth consecutive year
Mumbai, April 15, 2026: Tata Steel has been recognised as a Steel Sustainability Champion 2026 by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), marking the ninth consecutive year that the Company has received this prestigious recognition.
The Steel Sustainability Champions programme acknowledges worldsteel member companies that demonstrate outstanding commitment and action towards sustainable development through active participation in worldsteel’s sustainability initiatives. Tata Steel is one of the only two companies that have been recognised every year since the programme’s launch in 2018.
Commenting on the recognition, T. V. Narendran, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel, said: “At Tata Steel, sustainability is embedded in the way we operate - from improving resource efficiency and advancing low-carbon technologies to creating long-term value for communities and stakeholders. Being one of the only two companies to be recognised as Steel Sustainability Champions for the ninth consecutive year is a strong validation of our commitment to responsible and sustainable steelmaking.”
The recognition highlights Tata Steel’s continued efforts to embed sustainability across its operations, including initiatives to enhance resource efficiency, reduce emissions, and adopt innovative technologies that support the transition to low-carbon steelmaking.
To qualify as a Sustainability Champion, companies must meet stringent criteria, including signing the worldsteel Sustainability Charter and demonstrating strong performance across key sustainability indicators. These include material efficiency, environmental management systems, safety performance, employee training, investments in innovative technologies, and economic value distribution. Companies must also submit Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data to worldsteel’s global data collection programme.
Tata Steel is also an active participant in worldsteel’s Climate Action programme and continues to advance initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its products and processes. The Company has been working on several technology and process innovations to support the global steel industry’s transition to a low-carbon future.
