Mumbai, July 4, 2026: Tata Steel has secured multi-site certification to the SA8000:2014 standard, reinforcing its leadership in responsible business practices and commitment to advancing human rights at work.
The certification covers 1,19,230 workers across 23 sites, making Tata Steel Limited the largest certified organisation globally in terms of workforce coverage under a multi-site SA8000 certification standard. The Company has also become the largest certified entity in the Extractive & Minerals Processing category, as defined by Social Accountability International (SAI), establishing a new global benchmark for the scale and scope of social accountability compliance.
Commenting on the achievement, D. B. Sundara Ramam, Vice President - Corporate Services, Tata Steel, said: "The Company’s SA8000 multi-site certification reflects our deep commitment to upholding the highest standards of human rights, ethical labour practices, and workplace dignity across our operations. This achievement reaffirms our belief that sustainable industrial growth must go hand in hand with social responsibility, rooted in the protection and advancement of human rights."
The certification is the culmination of a more than two-year-long effort led by Tata Steel’s SA8000 Steering Committee in collaboration with dedicated Social Performance Teams across the 23 certified sites. The integrated multi-site certification demonstrates the Company's ability to consistently implement and maintain globally recognised social compliance standards across diverse manufacturing and mining operations.
The achievement builds on Tata Steel's longstanding legacy in social accountability. In 2004, the Company's Sukinda mines became the first mining operation in the world to receive SA8000 certification, followed by Tata Steel Jamshedpur becoming the world's first steel plant to achieve the certification.
SA8000 is the world's leading social certification standard, based on internationally recognised principles of decent work, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, and national labour laws. Certification to this rigorous standard reflects an organisation's commitment to ethical labour practices, fair treatment of workers, and respect for human rights across its operations.
