Tata Steel hosts 40th Senior National Archery Championship at Jamshedpur

Tata Steel is hosting the 40th NTPC Senior National Archery Championship, organised under the aegis of the Jharkhand Archery Academy at sprawling facilities of Tata Archery Academy (TAA), JRD Tata Sports Complex from October 1 to October 10, 2021.

Shri Arjun Munda, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Government of India and President, Archery Association of India will inaugurate the championship as a Chief Guest on October 2, 2021. Mr Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, Mr Pramod Chandrukar, Hony. Secretary General, Archery Association of India (AAI) and Mr Partha Mazumdar, Regional Executive Director (Coal Mining) at NTPC will be present during the ceremony.

Tata Steel sees archery not only as a promising sport for India with deep civilizational roots but also as a product of our tribal culture that must be protected, nourished, and nurtured for the benefit of our future generations. Tata Steel will continue to build and strengthen the bridges that connect our country's indigenous communities with modern India through powerful vehicles such as sports, art and culture."

Since archery is a preferred sport among the community, especially tribal youth, living in and around our areas of operations, TAA was formed in 1996 to identify and train potential among the youth in archery and inspire them to achieve excellence in national and international-level archery tournaments. The academy organises talent search programmes, identifies and trains young archers and equips them to achieve their goals. The cadets are provided with a world class ecosystem for excellence in archery with state-of-the-art infrastructure and highly qualified coaches. Till date, over 150 cadets of TAA have participated at the national level while over 50 cadets have participated at the international level, including the Olympics. TAA is also accredited to the Khelo India Talent Development Programme of Sports Authority of India.

The 10-day long sports extravaganza will witness presence of hundreds of eminent archers from across the country, team officials from 40 states, sports control or promotion boards, esteemed juries among other. The action-packed event will have Indian Round, Compound and Recurve National (men & women). Senior National will be conducted in three phases with Indian Round event from October 2-3, followed by Compound event from October 5-6 and Recurve (Olympic) event from October 8-9.

The Senior National is of immense importance as the top 16 rank holders in Recurve Men, Recurve Women, Compound Men and Compound Women categories will be picked from this championship for the final trials to be held on October 10 and 11 at Jamshedpur. This will be basis of Indian team’s selection for Asian Archery Championship, Dhaka.

On October 4, 2021, Tata Steel will also observe the Silver Jubilee of the Tata Archery Academy, which was set up to encourage the indigenous talent of local youth. Since 1996, the Tata Archery Academy has successfully nurtured and trained talented youngsters to contribute to the greater glory of the country.
