Tata Main Hospital to start Bone Marrow Transplant soon
Tata Main Hospital (TMH), the Medical Division of Tata Steel provides curative healthcare services not only to the community in and around Jamshedpur, but also to those from the surrounding states who have reposed their faith in the hospital for over a century. TMH which was established in 1908, soon after Tata Steel was born in 1907 has now evolved into a 981-bedded, tertiary care hospital equipped with modern facilities.
With the aim to address the need of ever increasing incidence and detection of patients with cancer in this region, TMH added the departments of Surgical Oncology and Medical Oncology to its pre-existing department of Radiation Oncology in 2018 in an effort to provide comprehensive cancer care. However, it was soon realized that there were a large number of patients from this region who had to travel across the country for the only curative cure for many cancers i.e.Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). However, the high cost of bone marrow transplant often makes this treatment modality financially unviable for many patients. This therapeutic treatment modality is the only curative therapy for many of the resistant malignancies like leukemia (blood cancer), lymphomas (malignancies of the lymph nodes) and multiple myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow itself). It is also the only curative therapy for non-malignant disorders like Thalassemia and Sickle cell anemia which are endemic in this part of the country. BMT is a procedure in which the diseased bone marrow is destroyed and replaced by healthy bone marrow or stem cells transplanted from healthy cells of the patient or a matched donor. BMT is an effective and lifesaving treatment for many life-threatening malignant and non-malignant diseases.
Tata Main Hospital has recently established a modern 4-bedded HEPA filter controlled Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit. It is a standalone dedicated facility for Bone Marrow Transplant, the first of its kind in the twin states of Bihar & Jharkhand which would bring international level care to patients from Jharkhand and adjoining areas at reasonably affordable rates. It would also offer treatment to patients waiting for months at the few centers in India which currently offer this advanced level of treatment.
The newly established BMT unit has 4 HEPA filtered rooms with dedicated Air Handling Units (AHUs) to ensure strict infection control as per international norms. A separate biosafety cabinet unit is available for sterile chemotherapy preparation for BMT patients. The transplant rooms have been provided with laminar flow, magnetic doors and other modern facilities for control of infection. This excellent unit with international standards will provide facilities for all kinds of bone marrow transplant. TMH intends to have affiliation with Bone Marrow Donor Programme of USA and other National and International Agencies in the near future with the ultimate aim of establishing a Stem Cell bank.
TMH is fortunate to have by this facility led by the expertise of Dr (Brig) Anil Kumar Dhar, VSM, alumni of KGMC Lucknow and Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai, who possesses more than 27 years of experience in various types of bone marrow transplants, including successfully managing complex cases in armed forces, Fortis Hospital, Delhi and Artemis Hospital, Delhi. He is being ably supported by his colleague Medical Oncologist Dr. Amitabh Upadhyay.
