Tata Main Hospital organises a workshop on Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

Jamshedpur, April 30, 2016

The department of ENT in Tata Main Hospital organized a lecture and workshop on Snoring and sleep apnoea the first time in the steel city. This programme was conducted by Dr. Vikas Agarwal MBBS MS FCPS DORL ,a renowned Robotic sleep apnea surgeon from Mumbai. He was assisted by doctors from the dept. of ENT and Anesthesia. He performed surgeries on four patients in TMH MOT.

Speaking about the snoring and sleep Apnoea Mr Agarwal said ‘It is very common in every family and is taken very lightly. However, many snorers are actually suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which the person stops breathing multiple times in sleep, for short duration due to choking inside the throat. This leads to disrupted sleep, lethargy, daytime sleepiness, headaches, depression, and in long term leads to blood pressure, diabetes and even heart attacks and stroke. In fact, the most common time of heart attacks and sudden deaths is late night and early morning.

This can be diagnosed by a sleep study, which is available at all major centers and TMH. Till now, the only treatment available was to use a mask called CPAP mask, which pushes air forcefully into the nares of the person to keep him breathing.’
