Tata Steel Gomardih Quarry Achieved 7.20 Million Accident Free Man Hours

Jamshedpur, August 13, 2003

Gomardih Dolomite Quarry (GDQ) of Tata Steel's Mines Division has achieved
the unique and enviable record of accident free mine for the longest duration. The Mine is Accident Free since 9th August 1992 and till 9th August 2003 it has clocked 7.20 Million Accident Free Man Hours.

For its continued outstanding safety performance, GDQ was awarded the National Safety Award in 1999 for lowest injury frequency rate per lakh man shift worked. The award was bestowed upon GDQ in a glittering function held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on 31st March 1999 by the then Hon'ble Vice President of India.

GDQ also bagged the Ispat Surkasha Puraskar 1998 (Performance Year 1997) among semi-mechanised mines and again got the second prize in Ispat Suraksha Puraskar (Mines)- 2000 (Performance Year 1999) for best Safety performance and efforts amongst semi-mechanized no-coal mines in a function held at Ranchi on 8th May 2003. Joint Committee on Safety, Health & Environment in the steel industry administers the Ispat Suraksha Puraskar.

Situated in Sundergarh district of Orissa and 13 KMs away from Rajgangpur on State highway connecting Rourkela with Sambalpur, Gomardih Dolomite Quarry, established in 1962, is a fully mechanised mine having crushing and screening facilities. Another uniqueness of GDQ is the SimpleWashing Techniques for fines adopted here for producing dolo fines with lower Total Insoluble (TI) and better flow-ability. Major products of GDQ consist of BF Grade lumps, chips and fines. Rocks in this area belong to Birmitrapur stage of Gangpur series of Dharwar age.

In line with our Vision 2007, the quest is always on in Mines Division for ensuring safety and environmental sustainability in all it's operations, like other Divisions of Tata Steel.
