Tata Steel’s Jharia Division honoured with ‘Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award 2019’

~ The collieries operated by Jharia Division is known for its sustainable mining practices ~

Tata Steel’s Jharia Division has been honoured with the Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award 2019 by the Institute of Directors at the 21st Annual World Congress on Environment Management and Climate Change held recently in Bengaluru.

The award was presented by Shri R. V. Deshpande, Hon'ble Minister for Revenue & Skill Development, Govt. of Karnataka to Mr. Vikash Kumar, Head (Planning), Jharia Division, Tata Steel on July 4, 2019.

The Company’s Jharia division coal mine is spread across 5,500 acres with six collieries in Jharkhand, and is known for its sustainable mining practices. At its mining operations, Tata Steel has undertaken several environmental initiatives to enable conservation, preservation, and restoration of biodiversity.

Mr. Sanjay Rajoria, General Manager, Tata Steel’s Jharia Division, said, “Jharia Division of Tata Steel is known for its sustainable mining practices. The environmental and sustainability benchmarks set by our collieries have been way ahead of time and is aligned with the Company’s principles of serving the community and the planet. We are proud to receive the Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award that recognises our innovative approach and efforts.”

The sustainable mining practices of Tata Steel is part of its commitment to the conservation, enhancement, and restoration of biodiversity in its areas of operation. To formalise this commitment, the Company has adopted a company-wide Biodiversity Policy and has also developed the Biodiversity Management Plans for all its mines and collieries. The progress made in these plans is assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature on a regular basis.

In December 2018, the Jharia division of Tata Steel had dedicated a 7,000 sq. meters Green Triangular Park to the people of Dhanbad in Jharkhand which is now home to several medicinal plants.

Golden Peacock Awards, instituted by the Institute Of Directors, India in 1991, is regarded as a benchmark of Corporate Excellence.
