Tata Steel awards Jyoti Fellowship to 782 students in Odisha this year

Tata Steel has awarded this year’s Jyoti Fellowship to 782 meritorious students from economically-challenged SC/ST families of Odisha as a part of the company’s Affirmative Action policy. For over 30 years, Tata Steel has extended financial support in the form of fellowships to deserving school and college students from SC/ST communities.

The objective of Tata Steel Jyoti Fellowship is to ensure that meritorious students from economically-challenged SC/ST families have the opportunity to continue to pursue their educational goals and fulfil career aspirations. Tata Steel’s Tribal Cultural Society (TCS) identifies deserving candidates from operational areas of the company on a merit-based test process.

Students were felicitated with this fellowship during ‘Arunima,’ the company’s three-day (January 23-25, 2019) event to showcase the progressive journey of its community-based initiatives, at Kalinganagar. This is the third edition of ‘Arunima’ that brought together over 2000 beneficiaries across Bamnipal, Sukinda and Kalinganagar. Mr Krushna Chandra Nayak, District Education Officer, Jajpur, joined as Chief Guest on the occasion and awarded the fellowships to students on January 23, 2019. Of the 782 students awarded Jyoti Fellowship this year, 353 students are from Kalinganagar, 203 from Bamnipal and 226 from Sukinda.

Mr Ambika Prasad Nanda, Head, Corporate Social Responsibility (Odisha), Tata Steel, said: "Jyoti Fellowship provides us an opportunity to inspire students to complete their higher studies and become successful in life. Our effort is to bring social change through education. I urge all students who are present here to not only aspire for a successful career but also to become good citizens of the country."

The cash amount of the fellowship was Rs 3,750 (for Class VIII students), Rs 4,500 (Class IX), Rs 4,500 (Class X), Rs 8,500 (Intermediate), Rs 8,500 (Undergraduate), Rs 10,000 (Diploma) and Rs 25,000 (B. Tech, MBBS etc). Certificates of merit were also given to students till Class X on the occasion.

Along with cash awards, the 16 top performers from Kalinganagar, Sukinda and Bamnipal in the merit test at the school and college level got computer tablets containing NCERT study material of Class VII-XII. The total amount disbursed under the fellowship today was Rs 50.36 lakh among all the students.

In the past five years, a total of 4,195 fellowships worth Rs 2.5 crore have been distributed to students belonging to Kalinganagar, Sukinda and Bamnipal.

Jyoti Fellowship enables students to pursue intermediate, graduation, post-graduation, LLB, B. Ed., Hotel Management or MBA courses. In Odisha, student of Ganjam, Jajpur, Keonjhar and Sundargarh districts benefit from it. Jyoti Fellowships are also offered to students in Jharkhand’s various districts like Purbi Singhbhum, Paschimi Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan, Dhanbad and Ramgarh.

3,269 students from Jharkhand and Odisha received Jyoti Fellowship during the financial year 2017-2018. Rs 1.9 crore were disbursed through the Jyoti Fellowship.
