Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) cadets selected to represent India at the World Youth Championship in Arco, Italy
A first for climbers from Jamshedpur
Two cadets of the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation Sport Climbing Centre have been selected by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, Delhi for the World Youth Championship (WYC) to be held in Arco, Italy from August 22 – 31, 2019.
The selected cadets (1) Anisha Verma – Age 15yrs –Female studying in Std. 7 in RMS School and (2) Aman Verma – Age 15 yrs – Male studying in Std. 8 in Kerala Public School, have been training at TSAF for the past 3 years. They have performed well in National level championships with Anisha Verma (National record holder in speed climbing) winning 4 Gold medals and Aman Verma winning 1 Gold Medal and Two Silver Medals in the IMF all India Sport Climbing Championships this year. Their excellent performance has placed Anisha Verma at 1st position and Aman Verma at 2nd position in National rankings in the Jr category, thus ensuring their selection to represent India at the World Youth Championship in Arco, Italy.
The WYC will be held in all three formats i.e. Bouldering, Speed Climbing and Lead Climbing. Performances in all the three events combined will decide the medal winners.
Prior to the WYC the TSAF cadets Aman and Anisha were under training at Innsbruck, Austria, along with Coach Bibhas Roy at their advanced facility there. While TSAF Sr Manager, Hemant Gupta was also with the team initially at Innsbruck, he took the opportunity to later visit Europe and understand about the climbing structure and meet coaches and officials with a view to carry best practices back to India and Jamshedpur.
Aman, Anisha and Bibhas have reached Arco, Italy on Aug’ 21st and they will return to India on September 2, 2019.
In the past Tata Steel Adventure Foundation Sport Climbing cadets (apart from Aman and Anisha Verma) Talim Ansari, Vidula Prakash and Suraj have participated in the Asia Kids Climbing Championship held in Iran, Singapore and China respectively. This is the 1st time that any climber from Jamshedpur is participating in the world youth championship in Italy.
