Tata Main Hospital to celebrate Doctor’s Day

Jamshedpur, June 30, 2019

The Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1 across India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was honoured with the country's highest civilian award, 'Bharat Ratna'.

A doctor dedicates his life to the service of the patients. He or she relieves the sufferings and pain of mankind. He cures them from disease and illness. He strives to make the life of others better and healthier. The observance of National Doctor's Day is to acknowledge the contribution of doctors and physicians in alleviating disease and suffering and building up a healthy nation.

Tata Main Hospital will be celebrating Doctors Day on 1st July 2019. The celebrations will start at 7:30 AM with all doctors assembling in front of the bust of Sir J N Tata at 7:30 am. They will do a line walk from there to JUSCO chowk and back to TMH via blood bank. On their return to the TMH there will be lecture and discussion on our theme for this year is “Zero tolerance to Violence against Doctors and clinical establishment”. All eminent doctors in Jamshedpur are also expected to participate in this walk.

Tata Main Hospital is a thousand-bedded hospital providing yeoman service to the community in an around Jamshedpur and thousands of patients coming in from far flung areas. The doctors here toil round the clock providing compassionate care to the needy and suffering. However, despite the exemplary efforts of the doctors, at TMH they are regularly faced with acts of physical and verbal aggression and abuse. Violence against health workers is unacceptable. It has not only a negative impact on the psychological and physical well-being of health-care staff, but also affects their job motivation. As a consequence, this violence compromises the quality of care and puts health-care provision at risk. It also leads to immense financial loss in the health sector. It also impacts the morale of the doctors and the compromises the care delivered by the doctors.

It is time that the community responds to the call of the medical fraternity and brings an end to acts of violence against doctors. Increasing cases of aggression against the medical professions would only negatively impact the society and will be counterproductive, demoralize health providers and take away the confidence and courage of medical profession, especially in critical situations. Ultimately the situation will adversely impact on patient care and safety and implications will be far-reaching on the community.

On the occasion of Doctor’s day, the doctors would like to highlight their contribution in creating a healthy society and request the community to allow us to work in an aggression free environment of us to extend compassionate care to our patients.
