Tata Steel in association with Sankara Nethralaya is providing best-in-class eye care facilities to the rural areas near Noamundi. The company reached out to the people of seven Gram Panchayats, namely, Kodgar,Naomundi Basti,Mahudi,Kadajamda, Balijhar, Deojhar and Ansaikela through its free cataract operation camp.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr Pankaj Satija, GM (OMQ), Tata Steel along with Ms Laxmi Soren, West Singbhum Zila Parishad Member and Mr Amren Dang. B.D.O. (Noamundi) on October 14, 2016 at Mahudi High School.The 1st hour of the camp witnessed over 50 registrations. The camp will continue till October 23, 2016.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Satija said: “We want more and more people to avail this service. Tata Steel has always been working for the welfare of the community and there is no better work than providing vision to people. I am happy to see so many people gathered here today.”

Ms Soren and Mr Dang thanked Tata Steel for organizing the cataract operation camp free of cost. They said that the villagers will definitely benefit from this as this is the best facility they can get at their doorstep.

A medical team of 27 is there at Mahudi village for 10 days to ensure best-in-class check-up and treatment to patients suffering from cataract. The registration and screening of cases has been scheduled from October 14, 2016 to October 17, 2016 followed by operation on October 22, 2016. Black glasses will be provided to the patients on the concluding day on October 23, 2016.

The main objective of this camp is to reach out to the aged people with cataract in remote villages and gifting back the vision that have preventable blindness. This best-in-class cataract facility for remote villages are provided completely free of charge through the Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) developed by Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai in collaboration with IIT Madras. With the success of the venture in Tamil Nadu, Sankara Nethralaya expanded the project with support of Tata Trusts to Jharkhand with logistical and ground support by Tata Steel. The MESU Jharkhand unit was inaugurated by Honble Chief Minister of Jharkhand on July 31, 2016 at Jamshedpur. This is the second such camp at Noamundi. The first one was organized on   September 11, 2016 at Sildauri village near Noamundi, in which 47 cases were operated for cataract.
