Tata Steel today won `The 3rd Annual Intellectual Property Awards’ for having the highest number of patents granted to an Indian owned private company in the last five years. Tata Steel registered 103 patents in the period of five years. The Awards included a citation, a memento and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. The award has been instituted to recognize the ‘Indian innovation’ in the different sectors.

Tata Steel’s Chief Resident Executive in New Delhi, Mr. Chanakya Choudhary, received the award from the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Anand Sharma at a function held in New Delhi. After receiving the awards he said that “Tata Steel is delighted to receive this prestigious award. This recognition will give immense encouragement to carry on the good work.”

The various categories under which the awards were given were –

1. Highest number of Patents Granted to an Individual in the last five years
2. The Highest Number of Patents Granted to an Indian Owned Private Company in the last five years
3. The Highest Number of Patents Granted to a Public Sector Undertaking in the last five years,
4. The Highest number of Patents Granted to an Educational Institution or University in the last five years
5. The Highest number of Design Registrations in the last five years.
6. GE India Innovation Award for most innovative initiative in the country.

Speaking on the occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day, Union Minister of Commerce Mr. Anand Sharma urged the industry and institutions to invest in human resources and innovation. The minister also said that the bright minds should put larger interest ahead of monetary incentives.

Others present on the occasion included Prof. Samir K Brahmachari Director General CSIR & Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India and Mr. P. H. Kurien Controller General Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Govt. of India.
