New Mannur Village inaugurated

The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr B S Yeddyurappa, today inaugurated the New Mannur Village in Haveri Taluka, Haveri District, Karnataka. The village, which was washed away by floods in 2009, was constructed by Tata Relief Committee (TRC).

The foundation stone of the project was laid by Mr Yeddyurappa on March 31,2010. Also present at the function on that day were Mr C M Udasi, Karnataka’s Minister for PWD, Mr H M Nerurkar, MD Tata Steel, and Mr Partha Sengupta, the then Vice President (Corporate Services) of Tata Steel and Vice Chairman of TRC.

TRC has built 144 housing units of 290 sq feet each in the village, which is situated 30 kms from the district headquarters of Haveri. A playground and a park have also been constructed. One-and-a-half kilometers of plain cement: concrete roads and 2.5 km of reinforced cement concrete drains have been built. The construction of a school and a community centre will be taken up shortly.

Others present on the occasion today included Mr C M Udasi, Karnataka’s Minister for Public Works, Mr Basavaraj Bommai, Karnataka’s Minister for Water Resources, Mr H.M. Nerurkar, Managing Director of Tata Steel and Chairman of TRC, and Mr Partha Sengupta, Vice President (Raw Materials), Tata Steel.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr B S Yeddyurappa, said: “I am extremely delighted to hand over the newly constructed houses in Tata Mannur village to the flood-affected families”.

Mr H.M. Nerurkar, Managing Director of Tata Steel, expressed his happiness on the timely completion of New Mannur Village. He said Tata Steel’s relationship with the State of Karnataka would grow in the years to come. He informed that Tata Steelwould set up a three million tonnes per annum capacity steel plant in Karnataka.

In his address, Mr C M Udasi, Karnataka’s Minister for Public Works, said the State government would provide the necessary infrastructure and facilitation for the speedy implementation of the proposed Tata Steel project in Karnataka.

About Tata Relief Committee
The Tata Relief Committee (West), a special agency, was constituted in 1967 in Mumbai. It was a result of the initiative undertaken by the House of Tata to combat the aftermath of natural disasters. A few years later, in November 1974, the Jamshedpur-based Tata Relief Committee (East) was incorporated. Spearheaded by Tata Steel, the Tata Relief Committee today includes Tata Steel's sister concerns, associate companies and industries in Jamshedpur.
