Symposium-cum-Exposition on Safety & Health hosted by Tata Steel

Jamshedpur, July 19, 2010

Tata Steel is hosting a two-day Symposium-cum-Exposition on Safety and Health for its employees and contractor employees between 19th and 20th July, 2010. This event is being held at the Steelenium Hall, inside Tata Steel Works.

This event is set to highlight Tata Steel’s proactive effort towards ensuring safety at all levels in the work place, whether it is on the road, shop floor or at one of the Company’s construction sites. Present to grace the occasion were Prof. Damodar Acharya, Director, IIT, Kharagpur; Mr Andrew Page, Group Director, Safety & health, Tata Steel Group as chief guest and guest of honour, respectively, besides Mr T V Narendran, Vice President (Safety & Flat Products); Mr Raghunath Pandey, President, Tata Workers’ Union and others.

During the two day affair, eminent speakers have been invited to share their view on practice of safety measures especially in steel making companies, construction sites and other areas of critical operations. The exposition session will provide a platform to discuss and showcase safety standards and best practices as observed in Tata Steel.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Acharya said, “I was pleasantly surprised when my driver politely asked me to fasten my seat belt before he brought me to Steelenium Hall. It only reflects how safety practices have successfully percolated from the Management down to the lowest level in Tata Steel.”

It may be noted here that apart from implementing about 25 safety measures to be followed by all employees and contractors’ employees, the latest initiative undertaken was the launch of ‘Injury Free Steel’. The Company’s safety mascot was remodeled and ‘Jeevan’ was brought before all. Sensing the need to convey this message beyond the boundaries of the Company, Tata Steel, in association with SAFE Club inaugurated ‘Harm Free Education’ in an effort to reach out to the young population in the city.
