Tata Steel sales up 26 per cent in January, hot metal output increases 32 per cent

Tata Steel’s hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel production in January 2009 was significantly higher than production in the corresponding month of 2008. Production of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel in January 2009 increased by 32 per cent, 25 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively, over production in January 2008. Sales in January 2009, too, went up by 26 per cent compared with sales in January 2008. The comparative figures are appended in the table below:

Best ever monthly production

  • Steel Melting Shops recorded their best ever production of crude steel at 5, 24,586 tonnes (Previous best 5, 14,266 tonnes in Nov’08).
  • Saleable steel production was highest-ever at 5, 47,633 tonnes (previous best 4, 60,046 tonnes in Aug’08).
  • Highest production of hot metal from H Blast since its start-up. It produced 2, 57,271 tonnes in Jan’09, which marks a capacity utilization of 124 per cent.
  • Best-ever steel despatch from Jamshedpur works at 4,96,853 tonnes (previous best 4,47,449 tonnes in Mar’08).
  • Best-ever sales of long products at 2,11,142 tonnes (previous best 1,86,630 tonnes in Nov’08)

In January 2009, Tata Steel won the coveted ET Company of the Year Award. During the month, initial civil construction work also commenced at the company’s 6 mtpa integrated Greenfield steel project at Kalinganagar, Orissa.
