Tata Steel completes fiscal '06-'07 on a thumping note

Mumbai, March 14, 2007

Tata Steel today has been conferred "Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in Public Health" by US-India Business Council (USIBC), Population Services International (PSI) and The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) at an event organized by FICCI held at Taj Mahal Palace & Tower in Mumbai. Mr. B. Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel received the award from Ms. Ashley Judd, acclaimed Hollywood actress and PSI board member. Tata Steel has been selected for the award for their outstanding contribution done for combating HIV/AIDS.

Receiving the award, Mr. B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel said, "As a corporate citizen, for almost a century, Tata Steel Ltd is committed to improving the quality of the life of its employees and also the community that we operate in. We have set some global benchmarks in corporate social responsibility and this award is yet again recognition the exemplary work undertaken by Tata Steel in controlling and prevention of a life threatening disease like HIV/Aids."

Tata Steel is a pioneer in the concept of CSR. It believes that the loyalty and commitment of its employees depend upon the quality of life they are provided with at work and at home. The company has constantly endeavoured in improving the quality of life of its employees and also of the citizens residing in and around the Steel Works in Jamshedpur and the various out locations scattered in different States in the country as well as abroad. Consistent with the Group Purpose, Tata Steel has declared in its vision statement that it will constantly strive to improve the quality of life of the communities it serves through excellence in all facets of its activities.

Tata Steel has always being proactive in its responsibility towards the well-being of the society and its focus has been to make its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts more effective. Year after year the company makes available health care services to employees and non employees. Through mobile medical units and community based programme, it reaches out with preventive and curative care to semi urban and rural areas. Through the implementation of various health related awareness programmes Tata Steel has ably kept carrying the message of good health and hygiene to all within and beyond its operational areas. The company has not only successfully changed notions of thousands of villages on water and sanitation , two of the basic needs for healthy life, but it has also been also successful in the battle against problems like maternal and child mortality, AIDS ,Tuberculosis and many more.

Tata Steel Ltd's involvement towards preventing HIV/AIDS dates back to early 90s when the organisation realised that the disease had acquired epidemic proportions and accepted that its control or prevention was not the sole responsibility of the government. In 1994, the management of Tata Steel Ltd evolved a Corporate Sector Model to prevent STD/HIV/AIDS and constituted a Core Group - AIDS and Nodal Centre - AIDS to focus on this disease and formulate strategies for its control and prevention. Since more than a decade, annually approximately 250 AIDS Awareness Programmes are conducted within the workplace.

Over the years, the nature of the company's involvement with the community has undergone a change. It has moved away from charity and dependence to empowerment and partnership. The many facets of Tata Steel's efforts are medical and health services in the rural and semi-urban areas, sports, women's health and education, water harvesting and tribal development, relief and rehabilitation and income generation, among others.

This responsible corporate citizenship is also reinforced by the number of awards Tata Steel has received in recognition of its CSR efforts. The most recent testimony to Tata Steel's contribution is The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) Award conferred on it in recognition of corporate leadership for good corporate citizenship and sustainable initiatives. Tata Steel is the only Indian company to have pledged to translate the Global Compact principles on human rights, labour and environment into practice and was conferred the Global Business Coalition Award for Business Excellence in the Community for HIV /AIDS.

Tata Steel relentlessly deploys its resources, strengths and strategies to create an EVA positive company and to continue to improve the quality of the life of its employees and the communities it serves. It does so while upholding the core values of transparency, integrity, honesty and accountability which are fundamental to the Tata Group.
