Tata Steel Celebrates World Aids Day

The Corporate Sustainability Services Division of Tata Steel Ltd together in collaboration of NGOs, local schools, RAF and Kavach - A Trucker’s Project celebrated World Aids Day on December 1ST in Jamshedpur through various awareness campaigns, initiatives and road shows. The theme for 2008 was “Stop AIDS Keep the Promise – Leadership”.

Tata Steel has taken up several measures to combat HIV/AIDS in the last 14 years. Like previous years, Tata Steel observed World AIDS Day and organised activities and events to generate mass awareness on this issue. Throughout the day several activities to spread awareness on AIDS was conducted across the city.

The Key highlights of the initiatives included -

A “Walk for AIDS” rally had been taken out at 9.30 AM from JRD Tata Sports complex through various key locations like Convent School road, Straight Mile road, Town office and back to JRD Sports complex. Almost 5000 participants from schools, project staff of Corporate Sustainability Services Division, Rapid Action Force, different NGOs as well as different walks of life took part in the Rally. Mr. Bailey Bodhanwala, CMD Tarapore & Co. was the Chief Guest.

A float with ‘Nukkad Natak’ and Puppet Show team was flagged off from Tata Steel Rural Development Society premises by Chief Guest Dr. N. K. Das, Chief Medical Services, TMH. This float went to Tarun Sangh, Sastri nagar to end of Domahani, Sonari covering busteesalong Marine Drive area. These various street shows, puppet acts and the distribution of Red Ribbon were successful in spreading awareness about AIDS.

A ‘Rangoli Competition’ with theme on HIV/AIDS was organized at the Community Development centre from 9 AM onwards. Mrs. Srimanti Anand Sen was the Chief Guest. A workshop on “Art of positive living” was conducted at Arogya Bhavan.

A Health Camp for truckers was conducted at Transport Nagar from 10 AM onwards in which truckers and their helpers were treated and informed about HIV/AIDS. Mr. Ranjan Chowdhry, SDO (E S) was the Chief Guest for this occasion. In the evening, there were info-tainment programmes and heath games that were conducted. This was followed by a Lucky draw at Transport Nagar in which Mr. V. K. Sinha, Regional Manager HPCL was the Chief Guest.
