Tata Steel to Observe July as 'Hamara' Ethics Month as Tribute to JRD Tata

As a tribute to Bharat Ratna, JRD Tata who is also a role model on business ethics, Tata Steel has decided to observe July as "Hamara" Ethics month.The object of this unique initiative is make all employees of the Steel Company, including those based in its far-flung raw material sources aware of the Tata Code of Conduct, the relevance of corporate governance and to adopt an ethical behavior at their work place. The campaign is even more significant today, as many corporate houses in the recent past have failed to maintain ethical behaviour in their business dealings and have lost their esteem and respect as honest, fair and transparent business houses.

The campaign has been called 'Hamara" to create a feeling of belonging and ownership among all individual employee and generate team feeling across the company.

Numerous activities were undertaken during this month. Some of them were - hosting of Tata Code of Conduct on e-Procurement site on the company's Intranet, organising an awareness talk on Business Ethics by Dr Sanjoy Mukherjee, an eminent professor of Centre for Human Values and Ethics, IIM Kolkata, quiz rounds, talks and skits on the subject of ethics at different departments and all out locations of the company. There was overwhelming response and employees participated in the campaign with great enthusiasm.

The final function was held on July 30, 2003 at Steelennium Hall in the Steel Works. Mr. B. Muthuraman, MD, Tata Steel was the Chief Guest and distributed prizes to the winners of the slogans, suggestions competitions conducted during the month. The final of the quiz competition was also held today. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Muthuraman reiterated that such events should be held more regularly in our work place to constantly remind to conduct our business in the most ethical way despite various adverse conditions prevailing all around us.
