Tata Relief for Gujrat Earthquake Victims

In an emergency meeting with Jamshedpur senior citizens, Tata Steel union and management met to discuss and decide on the implementation of the following immediate relief measures in the earthquake effected areas of Gujrat.

  • At the meeting, an agreement was signed between Tata Workers’ Union, TISCO Mazdoor Union and management along the lines of relief assistance in Orissa whereby employee contributions of a day’s wages will be matched by the management.
  • Tata Steel will be flying in 320 units of blood on Monday directly to Bhuj as the Ahmedabad-Bhuj link is not currently motorable. Mr. Kamal Midha, Secretary, Tata Relief Committee will oversee this operation and contact local authorities in Bhuj to determine specific areas where relief and assistance can be provided. Medical teams and medicines will be flown in as per requirements. Additional blood units will be dispatched and collections taken in Jamshedpur.
  • Ten thousand blankets will be flown in within the next two days.
  • Tata Steel MD appealed to organizations for providing infrastructure for collection of relief items and clothes. Trucks will be dispatched to Jamshedpur communities at scheduled times for collection. These schedules will be communicated in the media.
  • A list of collection centres where donations can be deposited in the form of checks to the Tata Relief Committee will be communicated shortly. Receipts will be issued at these locations and these donations will be tax deductible under Section 80c.
  • MD, Tata Steel, reiterated that money will not be a constraint in offering assistance in the time of this national emergency. He appealed to the Jamshedpur citizens to join in these efforts to assist the victims, and to employees of other companies to follow Tata Steel’s example. MD, Timken India and MD, TCIL have committed their support at the meeting itself.

Gujarat Earthquake: Tata Relief Committee Sets Up Collection Centers
January 29, 2001

Subsequent to the emergency meeting held on Sunday, 28th January, 2001 to discuss and decide relief measures in the earthquake affected areas of Gujarat the Tata Relief Committee has set up collection centers across Jamshedpur. Citizens of Jamshedpur can now conveniently make contributions in cash or kind at the following community centers of CD&SW Department, Tata Steel from 8:00 am to 1200 noon and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm:

In addition to the above, The Tinplate Company of India has also set up a collection center at Tinplate Town Office, Kadani Road. The center will be open daily from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The contact persons at this center are Mr J Davis and Mr P Sharma whose telephone numbers are 431219(Ext:2104) and 341713(Ext:2145), respectively.

Receipts will be issued at the centers against all contributions made by the citizens. Donations made to Tata Relief Committee are exempt from Income Tax under section 80 G.

Those interested in donating clothes may also deposit them at the Dhatkidih Community Center. The Tata Relief Committee will assist in sending them to Gujarat.
