"By Hook or By Crook,
Win We Will"

said ERS to CRM

Since the stator was wire wound, part repair was not possible. Complete rewinding of a 400 kW stator normally takes about 18 days : 12-15 days for winding, one day for vacuum impregnation, and two more days for motor assembly and testing.

On 10th April, 2001, at the Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) 2 of the Cold Rolling Mill (CRM), one of the 400 kW motors failed. It was immediately sent to Electrical Repair Shop (ERS). When the motor was opened at ERS, the stator was found to be in a healthy condition, but the bottom coil was burnt in a slot.

ERS normally works in two shifts only. Stoppage of CGL 2 was a matter of great concern since trials were scheduled to begin on 2nd May in the presence of Managing Director and other dignitaries. By hook or by crook, the motor had to be repaired on time. The Electrical Repair Shop took this as a challenge and reassured CRM that the trials would begin as scheduked. All the repair activities were minutely detailed  and against each activity, strict time schedules were framed. A Task Group of nine was formed. It was decided to work in all three shifts with three persons in each shift.

The team sprit and commitment were so high taht rewinding was completed in a record time of six days. The motor was delivered to CRM on 21st April. The trials of CGL 2 were taken on 2nd May as per the original plan. ERS met its commitment to CRM. Wow! What a feat.
