CUT
YOUR LENGTH ACCORDING TO THE BAR
Recent changes in the market
place have made it difficult to sell assorted length bars. Mixed lengths were getting
generated in the Merchant Mill, since unequal sizes were cut by the cooling bed shear
following haphazard alignment of the bars on the cooling beds as well as limitations in
the cold shear (No.2) cradles to accomodate 12 metre bars. Problems, problems and more
problems - at a time when the customer is the King.
The cold shears and four chain conveyors are available for cutting
the finished bars to the lengths required by the market. The cold shears receive the
finished stock from the cooling beds via a table drive. In order to meet the customers'
demand for bars of fixed lengths, several improvement initiatives were taken up. The
cooling bed PLC programmes were modifiedin order to optimise the cutting length. PLC based
controls were introduced in the cold shear chain conveyors for better reliability, and the
length of the(No.2) cradles was increased to accomodate 12 metre pieces. One, two three -
areal "three-in-one" solution to leave a sweet taste in the mouth of the
customers. Three cheers. Hip, hip, hurrah!
These innovations have led to a reduction in
the generation of assorted length bars from 30% to less than 10%. This has not only
ensured that the Merchant Mill is able to satisfy customer demand, but has also saved
unwanted materials being made by Company.
Cutting your coat (bar) according to the cloth
(total stock length) is an old adage valid even in today's hep world. Ha - Ha! |
