Summary
This paper covers the overview of the
expansion of the crude steelmaking capacity of Tata Steel from 4.0 mtpa to 5.0 mtpa. The
various aspects including basic design issues, strategies adopted and the facilities /
upgradations being planned as part of the expansion, are presented.

Dr Sunil Kumar joined
Tata Steel in 1987 as graduate trainee after completing his B.Tech (Hons.) in
Metallurgical Engineering from IT-BHU, Varanasi. In the year 1989, Dr Kumar left Tata
Steel and joined The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, where he completed
his MA Sc (in 1991) and PhD (in 1996) degrees in the area of Process Engineering related
to Continuous Casting of Steel. At the University, he also worked as Research Engineer and
developed a commercial expert system for diagnosing quality problems in cast steel
billets, as well as an online Intelligent Mould system for billet casting
process. In 1996, Dr Kumar joined Hatch Associates Ltd, in Mississauga, Canada where he
was involved in process engineering consultations to the iron and steel industry. Dr Kumar
returned to India in 1997 and joined Tata Steel where he is currently, Technologist in
Flat Product Technology Group, responsible for Steelmaking and Slab Casting processes. He
has published over 50 technical papers / monographs and co-authored one electronic book on
Expert Systems. Dr Kumar has received a number of awards including Jerry
Silver Award (1993) from the Iron and Steel Society, USA, John Sylvan Nadeau Award (1995)
from University of British Columbia, S Vishwanathan Award (2003) from Tata Steel, and
Essar Gold Medal (2003) from the Indian Institute of Metals. He is a professional member
of IIM and AIST.

Vinay V Mahashabde,
joined Tata Steel in 1986 as graduate trainee after completing B. Tech in Metallurgical
Engineering from IT-BHU, Varanasi. Since then he has held various positions in the areas
of Process Control, Operation and Engineering. Currently, he is Head Slab Casting at LD 2
& SC, looking after Slab Caster operations and Technical Services. He was involved in
all the phases of Slab Casting Process and related technology covering design, selection
of technology, erection and commissioning and operations. He has authored more than 40
technical papers.

P K Ghose, obtained B.
Tech. (Hons) in Mechanical Engg. from IT BHU. He joined Tata Steel as Graduate Trainee in
1991. After completion of Training Mr. Ghose worked in Mechanical in Mechanical
Maintenance of LD Shop 1 for six years. He became Technical Officer in 1998 and worked in
Steelmaking Technology Group, LD Shop 1 Steelmaking operation and Performance Ethic
Team.Mr. Ghose became Chief LD 1 in May 2001. In May 2003 he joined Engineering &
Projects Division as Chief Steelmaking Projects.

Awadhesh Kumar Das after
obtaining Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Joined Tata Steel as JST in 1973. He is
presently working as Head Operation (Project) in the Engineering and Project Division and
is associated with I Million Ton expansion program. Before taking up the present
assignment Mr. Das had been associated with Mechanical Maintenance of Blast Furnaces, M
& L S Mill and LD Shop-1. He was Technologist Project Management in Long Product
Technology Group. He has coordinated most of the major projects of LD Shop-1. He was full
time member of the Steel Expansion Task Force and also for the 2.4 mtpa Growth Plan.
He obtained specialized training on
operation and maintenance of steel plant equipment in general and Billet Caster & BOF
plant in particular under overseas training programs. He has many publications to his
credit in reputed technical journals. He has visited many steel plants in India and abroad
besides attending international conferences in steel making areas organized in India and
abroad.
Suresh Kumar, (47), a
B.Tech. from IIT-Kanpur in Mechanical Engineering, joined Tata Steel as a Graduate Trainee
in 1980. He did his Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management form XLRI Jamshedpur. He
has worked in various capacities in different Works departments and contributed
significantly in the field of Maintenance. Presently he is heading the group under 2.4
mtpa expansion plan, working on LD3 & TSCR project.

Hridayeshwar Jha,
completed B Tech (Elect.) from Banaras Hindu University, M Sc Engg. (Power Electronics)
from Ranchi University and PGDBM (Marketing & Finance) from XLRI, Jamshedpur. He
joined Tata Steel as a graduate trainee in 1979 and worked as Electrical Maintenance
Engineer in SMS 3, RM 2 and Finishing Mills. He was selected as Technical Officer in 1987
and was assigned to work with DGM (Maint) for problem solving and trouble shooting in the
various departments. In 1989 he became a member of Core group formed for the commissioning
of LD2 & Slab Casting Shop under Modernisation phase 3. He has been working for the
engineering, commissioning maintenance and operation of LD 2 & SC.
He got several awards such as N N
Mukherjee Gold Medal from XLRI, Jamshedpur, Essar Gold Medal of Indian Institute of
Metals.
