Ground breaking for capacity expansion by a million tonne
by MD, Tata Steel, Mr B Muthuraman

At Tata Steel’s two steel-melting shops LD Shop 1 (LD1) and LD2 and Slab Caster Shop (LD2), the total crude steel production capacity is 4.0 mtpa (~1.3 mtpa at LD 1 and ~2.7 mtpa at LD 2). The basic features of the two steelmelting shops are presented in Table 1. While LD 2 has been a 100% CC shop from inception stage, the product mix of LD1 initially consisted of both cast billets and ingots, but now even this is also 100% a continuous casting shop.

Strategy for Capacity Expansion

In the year 2002, Tata Steel decided to increase crude steel production capacity by 1.0 mtpa from the current level to ~5.0 mtpa. At this stage, the new capacity of LD 1 was fixed at 1.8 mtpa while the corresponding figure for LD 2 was 3.2 mtpa; an increase of 0.5 mtpa in both the shops.
