Development of world-class
workforce FAMD takes the lead
The Ferro Alloys and Mineral Division
(FAMD) of Tata Steel launched a path breaking initiative for the development of a world
class work-force with the help of Win Research & Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd (WIN).
The objective of this intervention is to create a knowledgeable work force in the mining
and manufacturing sector that will rival the best in the world in terms of production,
productivity, product quality and customer satisfaction.

| The Sukinda Mines |
This initiative is particularly
interesting and unique as it reinforces the age old educational methodology used in India
- the Guru-Shishya Parampara (workers training the workers) - to establish a learning
organisation and empowered workforce capable of independent decision making and problem
solving. This intervention also deals with challenges such as changing the mindset to
inculcate worker ownership and commitment.
Senior executives of the Company,
including Mr Niroop Mahanty, Vice President (Human Resource Management), visited Sukinda
Chromite Mines to inaugurate the Worker Trainers Development Process and release a
Worker Trainers Manual. This manual will serve as the main document for training 33
Worker Trainers of Sukinda and Bamnipal. They, in turn, will train the entire work force
in batches.
Mr N D Rao, GM (Operations); Mr G Nath,
Head (Sukinda); Mr K S Raju, Chief, FAP Bamnipal; Mr T R Natrajan, Managing Director, WIN
as well as the Union President and Secretary of Sukinda and Bamnipal were present during
the inauguration. The programme was launched on July 1, 2004, by Mr P Roy,
Executive-in-Charge, who has driven this path breaking initiative since its inception and
will continue to steer it over 25 months. |
