Virtually since Tata Steel identified Chhattisgarh as the site of a new green field project and signed an MoU with the state government, the Company began taking constructive steps towards creating a more empowered society, especially by building the capability of women and youth. During the year, the Tata Steel Rural Development Society established its tenth unit at Jagdalpur. Among its first few initiatives were a training programme on sewing for less privileged women.

The youth who expect to benefit from the vocational training programmes

In the month of June, the Society organised a three-day youth leadership camp for rural boys and girls at Sheshkiya Kanya Polytechnic. The camp was inaugurated by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Jagdalpur, Mr Nilkantha Tekam. Urging the participants to remain alert to opportunities available for improve their future career prospects, he asked them to play a decisive role in the establishment of Tata Steel’s plant in the Chhattisgarh. Reiterating the Company’s commitment to the all-round development of Bastar, Mr Krishnanandan of Tata Steel said that youth leadership camps serve to empower those who will participate in the progress of the region.

Technical Training to skill tribal youth

“I am always worried about ensuring that the people of Bastar become literate, skilled, prosperous and have a bright future. But to achieve this goal, my tribal brothers have to cooperate with me. That is why I urge them to support the establishment of Tata Steel’s project here,” Mr Baliram Kashyap, Member of Parliament, Bastar said while inaugurating the second phase of the technical programme being conducted by Tata Steel to impart skills to the youth of Bastar. Armed with the certificate given to them on completion of the course by the Builders Association of India, each of the participants can apply for suitable positions with Tata Steel or any other organisation. Mr Varun Jha, Vice President, Chhattisgarh Project, invited more and more tribal youth to take advantage of the opportunity offered by Tata Steel. It was because a sizable number of tribal youth had failed to take advantage of the first phase of technical training that the Company has launched the second phase, Mr Jha added. Most encouraging for the Company was the comment of the Hon’ble Minister from the Region, Mr Santosh Bafna, who equated Tata Steel with trust. “It is Bastar’s good fortune that the Company has chosen to establish a facility here,” he declared. Also present at the function were top district officials and company executives.
