Those belonging to the
Raw Materials units of Tata Steel are acutely conscious of their responsibility toward the
Environment. Apart from pro-actively working to set the highest standards for environment
management and conservation, they also endeavour to ensure the most efficient utilisation
of natural resources.
Therefore, World Environment Day is an
occasion for all of them to rededicate themselves to conserving Nature as well as to
escalate the level of awareness on the subject. This year, the theme for World Environment
Day selected by the United Nations was Dont Desert Drylands. To mark the
occasion Tata Steels Jharia Division held a seminar on the subject. At a function
organised by the Environment Cell at the Sir Dorabji Tata Park, Jamadoba, saplings were
planted by senior divisional officials as well as distributed among the employees. A sit
and draw competition was the process used to promote awareness among children.
At Noamundi, the day began at the crack
of dawn with a prabhat pheri by school children. The Iron Ore Mine chose to once again
green large barren tracts of land in the vicinity of its operational area. Over 3.5
hectares of land in the Noamundi market area and other smaller tract were covered with
saplings of fruit trees. Both company officials and villagers participated in the
afforestation drive. Noamundi has already covered over 45 acres of mined out area with the
creation of the Sir Dorabji Tata Botanical Park. It houses an exquisite collection of
cacti, succulents, house plants, ornamental shrubs, medicinal plants, orchids, bonsai and
even trees from the famous Amazon Rain Forest.
At Joda, as well, a barren tract of land
was greened. People from across the township came together to plant saplings and mark
World Environment Day. |
