| The International Iron and Steel Institute
(IISI) is constantly working towards meeting the societys demands for safe,
affordable, fuel efficient and environmentally responsible products. During the last
year, it has effectively ensured the application of the latest high-performance steels in
passenger cars around the world. Over the next five years, IISI will create a
comprehensive set of electronic learning materials in collaboration with major material
science universities worldwide in its quest to increase the number of bright young
graduates in metallurgy, whose future is steel. IISI
also provided members with inputs on safety and health in the industry, its
sustainability, advanced vehicle concepts, fast track market surveys, life cycle
inventory, reduction of CO2 emissions, clean steel, training for the future and building
the construction market.
Tisco News takes a closer look at two of IISI initiatives
in the past year viz. Safety and Health and Building the Construction
Market for Steel.
Safety and Health
If you cant manage safety, you
cant manage. A strong Safety performance is often accompanied by good performance in
areas such as cost control, productivity, and quality. Kirby Adams, Managing
Director and CEO, BHP Steel
An accident free steel industry, believes IISI, is an
obtainable objective for the world steel industry. Many of the member companies have shown
that safety, and the related issue of employee health, is best addressed when leadership
comes from the top.
Therefore, attendance at the last meet of the IISI Working
Group on Safety and Health had doubled over that of the previous year. A major issue
discussed was collection of data, so that with accurate information IISI members can
benchmark their performance against the industry as a whole. A Strategic Plan is also
being developed to help companies
The Safety & Health checklist
Improve leadership performance Engage and motivate employee
Establish best practices in health improvement Improve contractor safety performance
Compile accident statistics Encourage Safety Audits and global safety certification
programmes Recognise outstanding achievement
Building the Construction Market
for Steel
An ambitious plan is in progress to develop a
business plan to increase the volume and value of steel used in construction.
The opportunity in construction is huge, says IISI.
According to the United Nations, the population of the world will increase from 6 billion
people in 2000 to over 8.1 billion people in 2030, an increase of 33%. Meeting the
construction needs of people today, will demand solutions that are economic and less
stressful to the Earths environment.
IISIs Project Group is exploring how steel use in
construction can be energised through a worldwide project that also allows a focus on
local adaptation and implementation of demonstration projects. The potential
benefit of success is huge; its a chance, and its being taken.
| Working alongside Volvo, a IISI member company provided the technology for
the production of the rear bumper beam, the side intrusion bars, the B pillars
and the roof rail. All these parts were produced in advance high strength steel, adding
significantly to weight and cost savings without compromising safety. |
