The President applauds Tata Steel for 75 years of industrial harmony

“Competitiveness is the key to development,” His Excellency, The President, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam said and “will be the deciding factor between developed and developing countries. The time has come to become more and more competitive. Tata Steel,” he asserted “has made the world a better place” and that he was convinced the company, which was known for its technology, leadership and inspired workforce, would make the next 75 years equally memorable.

On The President’s arrival, the Honourable Governors of West Bengal and Jharkhand, the Honourable Chief Minister of Jharkhand, the Member of Parliament from Jamshedpur, Mrs Abha Mahto, senior bureaucrats, distinguished guests, the citizens of Jamshedpur, the officers of the company, office bearers of the Tata Workers’ Union and the workers, gave him a rousing ovation. After which the military band played the national anthem to welcome the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in their midst. The entire function was relayed live to enable other companies in the Tata Group to watch the proceedings.

A great Visionary pays tribute to another

The President drew attention to the vision of the Founder Jamsetji Tata and said that it is a sign of the love that the workers of the company continue to have for him that his statue is given pride of place at the Steel Works. “He was the leader of the economic freedom movement in India,” The President said.

“It is an amazing achievement to reach 75 years of Industrial Harmony. I hope the company achieves 100 years of industrial harmony and makes the country proud.”

The President then shared his own Vision for making India a developed country by the Year 2020. He urged the employees of the company to reach out to villages within the vicinity of Jamshedpur through “knowledge connectivity and electronic connectivity” so that they could become empowered. Tata Steel has been engaged in this task virtually since its inception.
