Skill development
through cataract workshop

Enlightenment brings progress in medical science

A live surgical workshop on cataract surgery was organised by the Tata Main Hospital on December 7, 2003. The purpose of the workshop was to acquaint eye surgeons of the area with Small Incision Cataract Surgery (non-stitch) and Phaco Surgery. This state of the art technique allows patients to resume a normal life soon after surgery. The workshop was attended by a large number of delegates from the region.

Dr Manoj Prasad calls for a comparative study of  techniques

For the first time live teleconferencing facilities were used to telecast the surgeries, involving difficult and complicated cases by eminent doctors, from Jamshedpur Eye Hospital to the XLRI Auditorium, for the delegates to view. The live telecast was made possible due to the joint effort of Tata Steel’s Information Technology Services, Corporate Communications and Medical Division.

Through a panel discussion, leading ophthalmologists Dr Ajit Singh of Patna, Dr. B P Kashyap of Ranchi and others deliberated on the merits and demerits of the new technique and those currently practised by them.

“Comprehensive relevant data should be generated on both the techniques for a comparative study,” emphasised Dr. Manoj Prasad, General Manager, Medical Services.
