The Sixth Edition of Tata Open Golf Tournament will kick
start on January 2, 2008 and conclude on January 6,
2008. The tournament will be inaugurated and declared
open by Mr. B Muthuraman, Managing Director - Tata Steel
on January 2, 2008 at 6.15 am. Also present to grace the
occasion will be India's former cricketer Sayeed Kirmani
as the Guest of Honour. This sporting
event is the first of its kind being organised in
Jamshedpur amidst Tata Steel's Centenary year
celebrations. It has grown from strength to strength
since its institution in 2002. The latest edition of
this tournament, the Tata Open 2008 is the fourth event
of the Professional Golf Tour of India's (PGTI) 2007-08
season. This sporting event is going to be staged at
Beldih and Golmuri Golf Courses in Jamshedpur. This was
announced in a press conference yesterday by Mr. B L
Raina, Managing Director - Tinplate Company of India
Limited, Mr. Sanjeev Paul, Managing Director - JUSCO and
Mr. Ajay Gupta, representative of Professional Golf Tour
of India. Tata Open that is being
held under the aegis of the PGTI for the second time has
attracted a number of top Indian professional golfers
such as Ashok Kumar, SSP Chowrasia, Digvijay Singh,
Mukesh Kumar, Rahul Ganapathy, Gaganjeet Bhullar and
Shamim Khan. A keen contest lies in prospect as all the
professionals competing would be eager to begin their
new year on the right note with a good performance at
the prestigious Tata Open 2008. Defending champion SSP
Chowrasia is one of the top favourites. He's won the
Tata Open on the Beldih and Golmuri courses on three
previous occasions in 2003, 2005 and 2006. The other
favourites include the 2004 Tata Open champion Ashok
Kumar and 2002 Tata Open winner Mukesh Kumar.
The Tata Open is scheduled to be played from 3rd to 6th
January 2008 with a Pro-Am match being played on 2nd
January 2008. Over 75 amateurs will be joining the
professional for the Pro-Am. Leading lady golfers will
also be seen in action in the Pro-Am. The tournament is
a 72-hole stroke play championship and the cut will be
applied after 36 holes. Thereafter, the top 50 players
and ties will play over the weekend.
The Tata Group has had a long
tradition of supporting sport, especially golf, not for
any return but as a policy. The Tata Open golf
tournament is another example of the Tata Group's
commitment to raise the standard of Indian professional
golf. The Tata Open, presently one of the highlights of
the Indian golf calendar, has over the years firmly
established Jamshedpur as a leading centre of golf in
the eastern region of the country. This year's
tournament is also very special as it will be the first
one being organised by Tata Steel in Jamshedpur in its
Centenary year. The Tata Open is being staged at two golf courses,
Beldih and Golmuri. Both these courses are lush green,
beautiful and very well-maintained and have the charming
Dalma Hills in the background. The 70-year-old Beldih
Golf Course is quite challenging, with long fairways,
one of which is nearly 600 yards. It is a long and tough
course which tests both skill and endurance. The Golmuri
Golf Course on the other hand is shorter than Beldih but
still challenging, scenic and engaging. In fact Beldih
and Golmuri are the brawn & beauty of Jamshedpur golf.
So the stage is set for the top
Indian professionals to battle it out on the fairways
and greens of Beldih and Golmuri. It now remains to be
seen, who has the 'nerves of steel' to emerge triumphant
in the Centenary Year of Tata Steel.
