December 14, 2001 Dr Amit Chatterjee, Chief Technology Officer, Tata
Steel, has been conferred the prestigious Helen Keller award. The 3rd National Centre for
Promotion of Employment of Disabled People Hellen Keller award was presented in New Delhi
on the eve of the World Disability Day on 2nd December. On this occasion, individuals who
in their way have made a considerable difference like Helen Keller, by going beyond their
disabilities, were honoured.
A team of judges headed by Mr Subodh Bhargava and Mr Shunu Sen, have opined: "Dr
Chatterjee has traversed varied paths, mentioned "the list of awards and
recognition that has been conferred on him is endless. Like the rainbow, it stretches
beyond the horizon." Mr B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel, while nominating
Dr Amit Chatterjee for this award, had written "I admire the courage with which he
has taken on this 'handicap'. It does not deter him. It makes him stronger in other
areas".
The award, including a citation, was presented to Dr Chatterjee by Mr Shivraj Patil
(deputising for Mrs Sonia Gandhi). Dr Chatterjee was interviewed by several TV channels on
his views on the Helen Keller Award and the role of "challenged persons" in
Indian industry.
