The saga of the Tejaswinis is unlikely to
end at the Steel Works. They now understand the worth of an opportunity. But rather than
wait for the moment they intend to create it.
With Tata Steel going global, these women too, aspire for a global outlook. When the
Managing Director, Mr. B. Muthuraman proudly talks about them at international fora and
foreign Company locations, they want to travel to these places to take the message of
change and bring back the wealth of knowledge.
When His Excellency, The President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam came to Tata
Steel on the occasion of 75 years of Industrial Harmony at the Company, he broke through
the barriers calling out to us - Tejaswini! The honour he and the Company have
given us is so overwhelming that we now collectively aspire to contribute much more to
India and Tata Steel, each of them insists.
Their strong sense of empowerment is reflected in their willingness to join Indias
ace mountaineer, Ms. Bachendri Pal, Chief, Adventure Programme, Tata Steel and a source of
great inspiration for them, right to the top of the world - to Mount Everest. |

The wheels of the vehicle I drive
are one and a half times my height and it is quite a task climbing in but once I am on my
seat, the heavier the vehicle the easier it is to drive up! Women like us cherish every
opportunity to complete a task because we value the job we now do. Now, a senior only has
to tell me the job for the day and then is it certain that it will get done.

I drive the vehicle which takes the patrol team across the Plant.
When any thief is caught, it is part of my duty to bring him to the office before taking
him to the police station. It does feel uncomfortable to have a criminal in the backseat
while driving but I have learnt to overcome these fears. With the help of an officer, once
I take them to the police station, their perception of me changes. |
