Dr. Tridibesh Mukherjee obtained
his first class degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Calcutta
University in 1964. Further, he completed his Master's degree in
1965 and Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of Sheffield, U.K.
Soon after his education Dr. Mukherjee joined the
Special Steel Products Division of British Steel Corporation. Later,
he joined Tata Steel as a Research and Development Engineer in 1971
and rose to occupy key positions such as Chief Metallurgist and
Director Scientific Services. In 1988 he moved to the Operations
department of the Company. During his tenure as A.G.M. (Iron and
Steel) there was an unprecedented rise in the productivity of the
blast furnaces. He was appointed as Sr. GM (Works) and subsequently
as Vice President (Operations). Closely associated with major
investment decisions of the Steel Company, Dr. Mukherjee is credited
with transforming the vision of cost competitiveness into reality.
He was appointed Executive Director on the Board of Tata Steel. He
has served as the Deputy Managing Director (Steel) in the Company.
At present, he is the Non executive Director of Tata Steel.
Dr. Mukherjee has also been a visiting lecturer
at the University of Sheffield, U.K. and an adjunct Professor at
I.I.T., Kharagpur. An honorary member of the Indian Institute of
Metals, he served as its President during 1991-92. Dr. Mukherjee is
a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He
represents India on the Technology Committee of the International
Iron & Steel Institute (IISI) and on the Alloy Phase Diagrams
International Commission (APDIC).
Presently, Chairman of Wrought Steel Products
Sectional Committee of BIS, Dr Mukherjee has also served as the
Chairman of Research Council of Central Glass & Ceramic Research
Institute, Calcutta, and C.I.I. Bihar Council during 1999-2000. As
Chairman of Tata Metaliks and Metaljunction.Com Private Limited and
Director on the Boards of Tata Yodogawa, Tata Refractories, Timken
India, JAMIPOL, Tata Advanced Materials Ltd., TM International
Logistics Ltd., Tata Ryerson Limited and Tata Chemicals Limited, he
has championed many new initiatives, providing these companies with
a technologically competitive edge. Dr. Mukherjee is also a Member
on the Board of Management of the Nuclear Fuel Complex, Hyderabad
and Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela.
Dr. Mukherjee, who is actively involved in social
activities around Jamshedpur, pursues hobbies and interests varying
from numismatics to collection of fossils and minerals. He is also
the President of the Jamshedpur Kennel Club.
Conferred with the Metallurgist of the Year Award
in 1975, Dr. Mukherjee's contributions have also been recognised
through several other awards; the Vasvik Gold Medal (1982), the
Bhoruka Gold Medal (1985), the Visvesvarayya Gold Medal (1987), the
Tata Gold Medal (1996) and the IIM Platinum Medal (1999). He was
also a member of the Tata Steel team that won the prestigious Franz
Edelman Award for Operational Research in April 1994. In 1998 he was
conferred the Manav-Mitra Award by the Bharat Sevashram, Jamshedpur.
In 2000, he received the National Metallurgist Award from the
Ministry of Steel, Government of India, in recognition of original
contributions made in the field of production, research, design,
development and environment.
