Mr Kharkar is a graduate in Metallurgy, and has completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from XLRI and a General Management Programme at CEDEP, France.

He joined Tata Steel as a Graduate Trainee in 1978. He has work experience in the fields of Rolling Mills, Quality Management Systems, Materials Management. He has served as the Vice President of Total Quality Management and Coke, Sinter and Ironmaking. Mr Kharkar has been involved in the technology selection, commissioning and subsequent ramp up to rated capacity and beyond of the Cold Rolling Mill of  Tata Steel and headed the department for over five years. He is presently the Vice President, MD Office, Mumbai.

He has co-authored a number of technical papers published in Tata Search and other national journals. Mr. Kharkar is a co-applicant for a Patent on 'Differential Roll Surface Texturing'. He is a recipient of The Indian Institution of Metals NMD award, 'Metallurgist of the Year' in the year 2004.
