Nilachal Refractories Ltd, (earlier known as lpibel Refractories) was set up in the year 1979 in Dhenkanal – a backward area of Orissa. Ipibel was re-christened Ipitata Refractories in 1987 when its promoter Belpahar Refractories changed its name to Tata Refractories (TRL). It was originally a joint sector undertaking promoted by IPICOL and Belpahar Refractories but, in November 1997, TRL purchased the shares of IPICOL and this Company is now a TRL subsidiary. The name of the Company was changed from Ipitata Refractories to Nilachal Refractories in August 1999.

The unit started commercial production in 1982 to cater to the fireclay and high alumina refractory requirements to Tata Steel. Since its inception, the plant has been manufacturing a wide range of refractory bricks (particularly alumina bricks), mortars, castables (including low cement castables), pre-cast/pre-fired shapes, etc. The turnover of this Company for 1999-2000 was Rs. 2.28 crores with direct employment of 549 employees and indirect employment of 80 persons/day.

The plant is pollution free and the environment in the surrounding area is extremely clean. The Company has provided the following facilities to its employees:

  • Housing facilities.

  • Recreation club.

  • Canteen facilities.

  • Consumer Cooperative Stores and Cooperative Credit Society.

Lake in any other Tata enterprise. different social welfare activities have been undertaken by Nilachal Refractories. The Company regularly contributes to the Indian Red Cross Society at Dhenkanal. It has also provided tube wells and street lights at different locations in Dhenkanal town. The Company's contribution to the Government Exchequer was Rs. 376 lakhs for the year 1999-2000 in the form of taxes, royalties, etc. The salutary effect of Nilachal Refractories in another backward area of Orissa has been substantial. "Neel" signifies blue – for the people of Dhenkanal, Nilachal Refractories has brought "blue skies" of contentment into their lives.
