The Ferro-alloys plant in Joda (earlier
Ferro-manganese plant) was installed in 1958 to supply manganese alloys to Jamshedpur. The
plant was set up in technical collaboration with Elkem (Norway) One of the world's
pioneers in this type of technology.
Considering the changed market conditions one of the ferro-manganese
furnaces (at Joda there are two Elkem furnaces) was modified in the year 1989 to produce
high carbon ferro-chrome. The plant continued to produce high carbon ferro-manganese in
the other furnace along with high carbon ferro-chrome till 1993. Then, the production of
high carbon ferro-chrome was suspended and high silicon ferro-managanese production begun,
as per Jamshedpur's requirements. At present, the plant produces 40,000 tpa of such
ferro-alloys employing around 310 persons.
Irrespective of which ferro-alloy is produced, around 50-60% of the
cost of production is on power, which is supplied to the Joda Plant through the Orissa
grid. With the high power costs. It is not always possible to compete in the international
market; even then, a part of the production from this plant has been exported.
