Tata Steel's Noamundi Iron Ore Mines conferred with FIMI's Bala Gulshan Tandon excellence award

Recognition for Tata Steel for its economic, social and environmental contribution

Tata Steel's Noamundi Iron Ore Mine today was conferred with Bala Gulshan Tandon Excellence Award by the Federation of Indian Mining Industries (FIMI). The award was presented to Noamundi Iron Ore Mine division of Tata Steel for its outstanding contribution to the national goal of sustainable development through conservation of environment and natural resources.

The award was received by Mr D B Sundar Ramam, General Manager (QMQ), Tata Steel Ltd. and Mr. S Kuchroo, Chief, Noamundi from Mr Dinsha J Patel, MoS Mines( Independent incharge) at a function held in New Delhi.

In order to recognize mining companies who are playing an exemplary role in promoting the general upliftment and social well-being of people, environmental conservation and better productivity, FIMI, instituted Bala Gulshan Tandon Excellence Award in the year 2004-05. The award is designed to recognize excellence in the over all performance - economic, social as well as environmental of the company.

The Noamundi mine has in the past received several awards for its relentless efforts towards sustainable mining. Tata Steel Noamundi Iron Mine received the Abheraj Baldota Environment Award 2009-10 and for 1990 -91. Earlier in 2000, the Noamundi mine was bestowed with Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra Award by Ministry of Environment for Lifetime Achievement for Afforestation and Ecological development.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Dinsha J Patel, MoS Mines (Independent incharge) stated "I would use this platform to urge the industries to do their level best to boost the Indian economy while being responsible for the society at large."

The Noamundi Iron Mine commenced its operations in 1925 and the seed of sustainability was sown the day the search for Noamundi began.The mines at Naomundi adhere to various operating practices for water conservation, air purification, noise reduction, energy conservation, land reclamation, amongst others. At the mines, Tata Steel has secured this position with a range of state-of-art environmental laboratory, external experts and work ambience conformation to environmental quality standards for safe, harmless and productive mining.
