Jamshedpur, September 23, 2019

Tata Steel is all set to host its annual event “A Celebration of Sports” to commemorate the contribution of Sir Dorabji Tata to Sports. The event will be held on September 25, 2019 at 4:00 PM at the Fasy Auditorium, Loyola School. It will feature a Panel discussion with Badminton legend Mr. Pullela Gopichand and eminent sports writer and historian, Mr Boria Majumdar. This Panel discussion is open to the students and the citizens of Jamshedpur.

PULLELA GOPICHAND

It is said that there are those who drive themselves to make their passion the reason for their success and there are those whose passion drives others to achieve success as well. Pullela Gopichand, former Indian badminton player, has achieved both. Gopichand not only brought laurels to the country, but also coached two of India’s Olympic medalist badminton players Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu.

He won the All England Open Badminton Championships in 2001, becoming the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone. Currently, he is the Chief National Coach for the Indian Badminton team and runs the Gopichand Badminton Academy.

After winning his first National Badminton Championship title in 1996, Gopichand went on to win the title five times in a row, until 2000. He won two golds and one silver medal at the Indian National Games in 1998. In 1996, he won gold in the SAARC badminton tournament and defended the crown in the next games held at Colombo in 1997.

He received the Arjuna Award in 1999, the Dronacharya Award in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014.

After retiring from his playing career, Pullela Gopichand founded the Gopichand Badminton Academy, which has produced several badminton players including Saina Nehwal, P. V. Sindhu, Parupalli Kashyap, Srikanth Kidambi, Arundhati Pantawane, Gurusai Datt and Arun Vishnu.

BORIA MAJUMDAR

Boria Majumdar, a Rhodes Scholar, completed his B.A. in History from Presidency College, Calcutta University in the year 1997. In 1999 he did his M.A. in Modern History from the same university and secured first position in the examination with record marks. He was awarded the Rhodes scholarship in 1999-2000 and went to St John’s College, Oxford University to do a D.Phil. on the Social History of Indian Cricket in October 2000. He was also the first Indian to be awarded a fellowship to work at the International Olympic museum archives in Lausanne, Switzerland. Currently he is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire.

The event “A celebration of Sports” invites students and citizens of Jamshedpur to come and hear the sporting legend. Invitations have also been sent to different schools so that students can avail of this unique opportunity.

Invitation cards for the event are available at JRD Tata Sports Complex, Corporate Communications Department at Armoury Road and Centre for Excellence. Seating will be on a first come first serve basis after the hall opens at 3:40 PM.
