Tata Steel Jharkhand Literary Meet Leaves a Lasting Impact

The second edition of the Tata Steel Jharkhand Literary Meet (JLM), the state’s premier literary festival, concluded today in Ranchi. Over the past two days, literary enthusiasts were treated to a series of superbly engaging sessions which spurred debate, discussions and insights spanning literature, art and culture vis-à-vis the individual and society at large.

Day two of JLM today saw Mr. Ruskin Bond share his thoughts on writing for generations of children in the session “Growing up with Ruskin” where he mentioned that young minds need engaging stories to hold their attention from page one itself. He expressed his happiness at the growth of literary forums such as JLM, as these help to bring together readers and writers alike and benefit both.

In the session on “Bhavishya Ka Ek Vikalp Hain Mahatma Gandhi” Mr. Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Speaker of the Rajya Sabha enraptured the audience with his views on the ill-effects of blind consumerism and misuse of technology. Mr Singh emphasized the importance Gandhian philosophy as the means to creating a better world and to help humanity come back from the brink of losing its very existence.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Malay Kumar Roy and Abdullah Khan spoke about their debut novels which are based in the region.

Noted actress Rasika Dugal of ‘Kshay’ and ‘Manto’ fame, who acted in the celebrated short films ‘Chutney’ and ‘The School Bag’ and more recently in the online series ‘Mirzapur’, spoke about the short film genre, highlighting the discipline in all aspects of film making that the genre demands. Celebrated screenwriter and lyricist Mr Niranjan Iyengar mentioned that while digital platforms enable reach, short films help better experimentation free from box office pressures.

In another session “Ek Sham Kavita Ke Naam”, Niranjan Iyenger, Hussain Haidry, celebrated poet and literary personality Anuj Lugun who is also known as the ‘Tribal Poet’, and well known writer and poet Chandramohan Kisku who writes in Hindi and Santhali regaled the audience with a mix of Hindi and Santhali poetry renditions spanning a variety of subjects.

In another highly engaging session in the evening named “Yeh Kaun Chitrakar Hai: Prakriti Aur Adivasi Sahitya”, eminent authors Mr. Mahadev Toppo, Mr. Chandramohan Kisku, Mr. Anuj Lugun, and Ms. Mohua Maji deliberated on the importance of nature in our lives and the need to stop playing destructive games with nature.

The day concluded with an amazing performance reliving the times and magic of legendary Ghazal singer Begum Akhtar with radio personality Sayema Rehman or ‘RJ Sayema’ as she is popularly known, narrating in her distinctive voice while renowned composer, musician and writer Vidya Shah sang evergreen lines of Begum Akhtar in between.
