Hon’ble Chief Minister of Jharkhand Shri Raghubar Das today inaugurated the College of Nursing and also the MESU (Mobile Eye Surgical Unit) Project at the Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur. Also present on the occasion were Shri. Bidyut Baran Mahato (M.P, Jamshedpur), Shri. Saryu Rai (Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs (Govt. of Jharkhand), Padma Bhushan Dr.S.S.Badrinath and Dr.P.Rajesh from Sankara Netralaya, Mr.Anand Sen (President TQM & Steel Business, Tata Steel Mr.Sunil Bhaskaran (Vice President Corporate Services, Tata Steel), Air Marshal (Dr) Rajan Chaudhry (Retd) GM Medical Services, Tata Steel, Mr.R.Ravi Prasad, President Tata Workers Union and Mr.Dinda and Mr.Tunnu Choudhary besides other officials and medical staff members.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Das said, “ The MESU project will first be launched in Chaibasa and if successful, it will be implemented in the whole of Jharkhand.” He welcomed Dr.Badrinath to Jamshedpur and Jharkhand and requested him to see the possibilities of setting up of unit of Sankara Netralaya at Ranchi. He mentioned about other medical initiatives being taken by the Govt. and said that in the next 4-5 years Jharkhand will become a healthy Jharkhand.

Mr. Bidyut Baran Mahato spoke about the concern of the Chief Minister about a year back on how to reach medical care to villages and said that today, his wish was being fulfilled. He thanked Tata Steel for working with the Govt on such projects. Mr.Saryu Rai spoke about the benefits of nursing and said that today nursing was important not only in hospitals but also in homes. He congratulated the State Govt and Tatas for this venture. Dr.Badrinath spoke on how each patient today spends more time in care of nurses and hence this profession was requiring more and more competent people. On the MESU project he said that this was a complication free process and a good way to tackle the issue of blindness where major cause is cataract.Earlier, Mr.Sunil Bhakaran welcomed the guests and thanked the Chief Minister for his support which had made the two projects possible in a short time. About College of Nursing
Nursing training program in Tata Main Hospital was started in 1939 through its School of Nursing. One of the oldest nursing training schools in India, the School used to deliver diploma program in Nursing. Alumnus of this school are spread all over the globe. The School of Nursing at TMH was upgraded to College of Nursing in the year 2015. The college delivers a four year Basic B.Sc. Nursing program. Graduate program is recognized by Indian Nursing Council (INC) and Jharkhand Nurses’ Registration Council. The College is the first Nursing College affiliated to Kolhan University, Chaibasa. During the course of the study, students will learn about various medical subjects, social subjects and nursing subjects as per the syllabus prescribed by Indian Nursing Council.The College building has been renovated as per Indian Nursing Council. For an enhanced learning experience, laboratories are equipped with simulation technique and manikins. While the College library houses more than 1500 books and various nursing journals for ready reference of the students, they can also subscribe to online learning modules for updated and evidence-based nursing practices.

About MESU
Tata Steel also launched MESU (), a medico-engineering project and ‘one-of-its-kind in Asia’ operating theatre on wheels. MESU is a collaborative venture between Sankara Nethralaya and IIT Madras with the support from Tata Trusts and Tata Steel. Equipped with the state-of-the-art eye care facilities, MESU is the only project where the Government. of India has allowed ophthalmic surgeries in camp mode. Jamshedpur will be the base for Jharkhand’s MESU facilities, catering primarily to rural patients in remote locations. The Chennai-based MESU unit has screened over 16,000 patients and operated over 3,000 in rural and tribal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, without any complications. MESU takes the most advanced cataract removal process deploying sutureless, phaco-emulsification methodology which is on par with the cataract surgery performed at most advanced eye hospitals. With MESU, eye surgeries will be performed right at the hamlet where the patient lives. The post-operative examination after a week is also carried out right at patient’s doorstep.
