The Ministry of Steel awards Tata Steel Limited with the Prime Minister's Trophy for its achievements in 2010-11

Tata Steel Limited was conferred with the Prime Minister's Trophy today at Rourkela for being the 'Best Performing Integrated Steel Plant' in the country during the performance year 2010 - 2011. In recognition of the Company's outstanding performance, the Prime Minister's Trophy was presented by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, to Mr. T V Narendran, Managing Director, India & South East Asia, Tata Steel. The Company was adjudged as the best steel plant for the eighth time since this trophy was instituted in 1992-93.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Narendran, Managing Director, India & South East Asia, Tata Steel, said "It's an honour to receive this award from our Prime Minister, Hon'ble Shri Narendra Modi. It has always been our endeavor to set the benchmark of excellence in efficiency, quality and sustainability in all our operations. This award will greatly motivate us to create higher benchmarks in the steel industry, and to make a meaningful contribution to society and the nation. Our philosophy of working together at Tata Steel has been the framework of mutual understanding amongst all stakeholders, helping us take the company forward in all respects."

Congratulating the management and employees of Tata Steel for the excellent performance in both the years, the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, expressed confidence in the company and its management, considering them as partners in his 'Make in India' mission for the nation stating the company as being true nation builders.

The Company went through three rounds of rigorous assessment, adjudged by a panel of distinguished judges. The enthusiasm and involvement of its employees was highly appreciated by the panel of judges for the Prime Minister's Trophy, reaffirming the core strength of Tata Steel - its skilled and motivated workforce that has a will to excel.

In the area of growth in Production, Operational efficiencies, Research & Development, Economic & Financial Sustainability, Quality & Branding of steel products, Customer Satisfaction and Human Resource development, continuous modernization. coupled with visionary leadership, creativity and knowledge application is enabling Tata Steel to reach the goal of truly being the best in class integrated steel plant.

Tata Steel has continuously improved its products and services portfolio through innovative value addition to address consumer needs. Its pan India retail and distribution network has enabled substantial reach of its products, especially to consumers in the rural segment.

About the Award:
The Prime Minister's trophy, instituted in 1992-93 on the suggestion of the then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, recognizes the outstanding performance of the integrated steel plants. The award is intended to spur steel plants to achieve international standards of efficiency, quality and economy in their operations. The primary objective of the scheme is to generate a sense of competition among the steel plants so that they continuously benchmark themselves with the best and improve their performances.

As per the recommendations of the Expert Committee and amendments carried out by the Government of India, 13 main parameters have been evolved for evaluating the performance of the integrated steel plants. They are: Steel capacity utilization, Efficiency of operations, Financial performance, Export performance, Quality of products, Environment Management, Corporate Social Responsibility, Safety, Thrust on R&D, Customer Satisfaction, Enabling Parameters, Employees' Satisfaction Index and Observation of the Panel of Judges based on plant visits.
