PROTOCOL FOR SAFETY OF ANIMALS, ANIMAL KEEPERS AND VISITORS TO ZOO

Jamshedpur, December 17, 2017: Tata Steel Zoological Park has a well laid out procedure for the safety of animals, animal keepers and visitors as prescribed by the CZA under Recognition of Zoo Rules (Amendment),2013 of Wild Life (Protection) Act,1972.

The salient features of the protocol are:

  NATURE OF ACTIVITY OUTCOME
AT THE TIME OF REPORTING FOR DAY DUTY 0830AM
1. Head counting of animals by zoo keepers in presence of  Zoo security Tally of  animal inventory
2. Manual inspection of paddock area  jointly by the keepers and security personnel prior to release of animals for display Preventing escapes and injury
3 Final clearance by the Curator / Head of animal section  
DURING THE DAY TIME
4 Locking of entry gate of cell/ night shelters of all animals during the cleaning of cells/night shelter and supply of food to the animals. Safety of keepers
5 Round the clock vigil of animal behaviour and visitor activity near animal enclosure jointly by keeper and security personnel. Prevention of untoward incidence
AT CLOSING TIME 0400PM ONWARDS
6 Placing of food in the feeding cells and watering the animals by keepers under guidance of Curator/ Head of animal section. Animal welfare
7. Manual inspection of all locks & locking system at doors of keeper gallery by animal keeping personnel in presence of Curator/ Head of animal section prior to taking into the animals inside their feeding cells/resting cubicles at close of day. Prevention of escape/injury
8. Securing all large cats, canids, bears and primates inside their feeding /resting cells and locking all doors by keepers in presence of zoo security. Dangerous animals secured
9. Handing over the security of animals to security personnel at close of zoo hours. Night custody of animals
10 Preparation of beat reports by keepers for presentation before the Curator/ Head animal section at close of days work with detailed observations of activity of each beat. Records of days happening
NIGHT WATCH AFTER 1000PM
11 Night keepers reports for duty and along with the security supervisor goes to each and every animal enclosure. Head count of all important and endangered animals done again. Day animal inventory tallied  and security of animals reconfirmed
12 Preparation of summary report of each beat  by the night keeper prior to leaving the campus. Records of night happening
MOCK DRILLS
  Every Monday / closed day of the Zoo - mock drills to be done by Security personnel to address disasters in form of animal escape / injury to visitors and fire fighting. Joint drills to be carried out every 30 days in guidance of Curator / Head animal section Preparedness to address disasters.
PREVENTION OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
  Prophylactic measures / Vaccination of all animals under care to be done periodically by the Zoo Veterinary wing. Vaccination and health check of zoo personnel on annual basis Animals and their caretakers free of communicable diseases

The above procedures are followed rigorously in day today management of the Tata Steel Zoological Society thereby ensuring safety of animals, animal keepers and visitors.
